GALLIPOLI

In July 2007, I visited the Gallipoli battlefields, devoting a day to each of the three main Allied landing sites - Cape Helles, Anzac and Suvla Bay. The huge Canakkale Martyr's Memorial is the main Turkish Monument to the battle . Standing at over 40 metres tall, the memorial was unveiled on the 80th anniversary of the battle and commands sweeping views across the entrance to the Dardanelles.

The sturdy British Monument at Cape Helles enjoys an impressive setting overlooking the landing sites with several CWGC Cemeteries in the vicinity testifying to the heavy loss of life here. Further north, Anzac Cove is small and hemmed in by the precipitous heights dominated by The Sphynx (top left) while rugged pathways give access to the cemeteries and memorials of Lone Pine (main picture), the Nek and other notorious landmarks where so many fell for no territorial gain in 1915.
